A hairy situation

In our last article, we identified Dangerous Goods (DG) as a blue ocean business opportunity.

There are chemicals, and then there are chemicals. Let’s take the salon industry for example.
Ketoconazole is a commonly used anti-fungal drug used to treat dandruff and is a Class 6 poison (Note: Poisons follow a separate classification system from Dangerous Goods). With the rise of the wellness trend, chemicals like ketoconazole are being made out to be the bad guy because of the side effects sustained in long term usage or when taken in high doses - therefore not necessarily the safest ingredient for your family dandruff shampoo.
So now, opportunities abound for suppliers of certified essential oils which are nature’s own anti-fungal agents. Some examples being clove, lemongrass and cinnamon bark.
"... With the rise of the wellness trend, synthetic chemicals like ketoconazole are being made out to be the bad guy ..."
Essential oils require delicate handling and storage due to the nature of some of the oils being flammable. Flammable liquids are categorised as a Class 3 hazardous material. Packaging the oils also require consideration, taking into account their strong odour, tendency to discolour when exposed to certain metals and plastics and of course the flammable factor.

Having said that, the extra care & cost going into the production, certification, packing and storage places your products miles ahead of “health hazard” materials as well as non-certified oils suppliers. This in turn gives you the edge when you demand a price that subscribers to the wellness industry are willing to pay.
If this article has gotten you thinking, then it would be a good time to note that Alien Logistics has DG certified staff and partners; and we handle dangerous goods on a daily basis so you can always bounce your ideas off us to plan your DG supply chain.

Go ahead and get started, we’ll walk with you all the way.
