Strategic Excellence in Return and Repair Logistics
For items with a limited life span or high cost of manufacture, it is becoming more common to factor in the reverse journey of these goods from the retailer back to the seller or manufacturer. Whether it is to be repaired, re-sold, destroyed or sent elsewhere to recapture value, the circular economy is gaining ground in industries from electronics and telecommunications all the way to automotives and aviation.
Services offered:
- International and domestic shipping & transport
- Local warehousing & distribution
- Bonded warehouse in Port Klang & KLIA for regional distribution
- Assistance with temporary import & export for repair & return customs procedures
Case study
End-of-life (EOL) products
Our Client:
A client in the telecommunications industry wanted a plan for their recall operations for end-of-life (EOL) products. This nationwide endeavour involved the collection of EOL goods from designated pickup points across the country. The goods then had to be brought back to a central point for tallying, segregation and storing of the products for the next phase. The goods would then be either shipped to another country for refurbishment or re-sale; sent to responsible recycling centres or disposed of at certified disposal centres.
What we Did:
- Orchestrated a nationwide reverse logistics operation for EOL product recalls including both West & East Malaysia.
- Consulted with the client to draw up a checklist of actions, proper labelling & schedule for the collection of goods from specified pickup points across the entire country.
- Involve the client operationally on the segregation of the goods, ensuring readiness for the next phase which was either export, recycling or destruction.
- Planned the shipping & transport options for the next phase
- Assisted the client with the export clearance procedures for used telecommunication items
Results:
The initial efforts in the tedious planning & constant communication and briefing sessions to the teams operating the collections points for the return of the telecommunications EOL product recalls enabled a smooth operation subsequently with minimal hiccups in the collection & segregation of goods; and an efficient carbon footprint.
The nationwide reverse logistics operation, coupled with precise tallying, secure warehousing, and efficient shipping, assured the client that they made a good choice to work with Alien Logistics for their commitment to environmental stewardship.
Aviation Industry
Our Client:
Our overseas freight forwarding partner sought us out to handle an aviation engine manufacturer’s request for their client in Malaysia to send an aircraft engine back to the manufacturer for repair as the specific expertise was not available locally. However, the oversized engine was not located at an airport approved for international shipping, so it had to be transported to the international airport and the customs paperwork for return & repair had to be done.
What We did:
- Arranged for a multimodal plan to transport the engine from the hangar to the manufacturer’s location overseas
- Stored the engine at our airport warehouse to await the flight
- Coordinated with the client and the overseas parties regarding the application of the temporary export permit for return & repair. Without this document, the client would have had to pay for duties for the engine upon its return.
Results:
The efforts required to survey the land journey from the local airport to the international airport to the planning & constant communication with all stakeholders involved resulted in a time and cost-efficient operation with minimal glitches in the export and subsequent re-import of the engine.
